This photo of Florence is a good example of a bitmap photo. Bitmap is a format of a photograph, bitmap is faster to display but can lose quality when stretched. But can deal with gradient.
This illustration is in a vector format which is a format of a drawing. It is seen as a mathematical equation therefore can not deal with gradient. The advantages of this is that it can be stretched to any size without comprising the quality.
